How to Get Out of Your Own Way
“Unchain your mind. Unchain your mind, from the imprisonment of fear! Unchain your mind! It’s been encaged with doubt! Unchain your mind, loose yourself! Let yourself free, from the binds of average, from the binds of normal.”- CT Fletcher
What is blocking you on the road to success? You may be dealing with a lot of obstacles in your life but because life is always happening (and not always under our control) it's important to start with what you can control... your mind. Often times the only thing standing between you and your success is YOU. You are capable of accomplishing more than you are allowing yourself to believe. A lot of times we tend to get caught up in our past and thinking that defines who we are.
The fact of the matter is the only factor in determining your ability to be successful is your mindset. It doesn't matter where you came from, which odds were stacked against you, or who is against you. In this life, it's just you against you.
One of the stories that I draw inspiration from is that of C.T. Fletcher's comeback. I am inspired by him because he has literally stared death in the face and said NOT TODAY and he continues to motivate people everyday. He was at the top of his weight lifting career when he had a heart attack and almost died.
At that time in his life I can only imagine how he must have felt. Here he was this big strong weightlifting champion who was reduced to lying in bed, barely being able to do simple things on his own. He could have gave up and decided not to ever lift weights again but instead he chose to pick himself up again. He decided that he was going to get back in the game.
What I really love about his story is that he uses the power of mind by motivating himself through a series of positive affirmations (with curse words included for extra motivation). He knew that if he was going to bounce back from his setback he was going to have to start with the way he thought. This is important because most times what stands in our way is not a person or our circumstances but the way we view and think about ourselves.
C.T. Fletcher is known for his acronym ISYMFS which stands for, "It's Still Your MF (<--expletive) Set". When he was given another chance at life he decided that his "set" wasn't over and in order to live a life of fulfillment he was going to work hard to get back to where he wanted to be.
“Decide for yourself what is our limitation.” – CT Fletcher
What are you going to decide for yourself? What is the limit that you are setting for your life? Are you living at capacity or are you burying your potential in a soil of fear and doubt? It's time for you to make a decision. Get out of your own way and start working towards your dreams and goals. You will be amazed by what you can do with the right mindset.
Here are some tips for getting out of your own way:
- Don't just talk about what you are going to do, take action
- Don't compare your own progress to others
- Let go of the need to be perfect to start
- Get rid of your "stinking thinking"
- Believe in yourself and your potential
- Focus on your "why" and desired outcomes
